i have a thing for paperbacks. i like how they're soft, the comfortable weight of them, the way they bend and their covers fold over time. i like them with white space & i like when their pages yellow over time like teeth. i like that the fonts are ever au courant, ever aging, ever easy on tired eyes. i like them with notes tucked inside them, with inscriptions, abandoned to thrift shops and library sales.  i like them in messy little stacks, tucked into corners of rooms, left on chairs, thrown into canvas bags, gathering sand in the summertime.

I love paperbacks myself. They're so quiet and detailed. They don't scream, "I'm here! Read me!" but they give a soft call that beckons you to their side.
Yet I love the feeling of a thick hard cover in my hand with the words printed neatly over the cover and tiny letters scribbled inside.

Same here. I still prefer paperbacks to ebooks. There's nothing like turning the page of the book, highlighting lines that really mean something and writing a few notes here and there on paperbacks. =)

there is something romantic about a paperback that you loose in the sophistication and sterility of a hard cover.

Perfect. So many wonderful books. Although I have an eReader, they will never take the place of actual books.

I love this.

I love paperbacks too. I cannot buy a book on my ipod because I just think I would hate reading a book on there. I neeeed to have it in my hands, to see how many pages are left, to see how far I have read and like you said, see it stacked somewhere. However, I will get the sample of a book on my ipod so i can read the sample of a book first to see if I will like it, but that is as long as I can last. There are a few books I want to read and I am torn because I don't want to buy the actual book because that means that will be one more book to ship when we move to the States, but I also don't want to read on my ipod. Such tricky business.

Speaking of novels, i just wrote you one.

So happy to find so many people loving a book the old fashioned way.. though I prefer the hardcover without the cover.. strong and bound.

Lovely post :) I love to read too, and most of my books must be paperbacks. Just found 4 more (thrifted) books last week ^^ They're even greater than any new ones.

In this ever changing digital age, you can't beat a wonderfully old and worn paperback. When buying them secondhand, it's nice to wonder about the people who held it before you and what they thought of it. Now, if only I had the time to sit down with a good paperback!

Beautiful! I love paperbacks, too. It's like holding something so special when you're reading.

weirdo warning -- i really want to sniff these. i grew up with two voracious readers as parents. i have images of them sticking their noses into vintage books and taking deep breaths and find myself continuing the habit as an adult. no better smell in the world!
