home: not THE universe, but YOUR LITTLE CORNER of the universe.

having a home that inspires you (and stays tidy) is so important. because either a) you spend a lot of time working from home and need a calm, creative space; or b) you spend a lot of time away from home, and need a neat, happy place to come back to.
making our home look just the way we want is a challenge. we live in a studio, so inevitably, there will always be some corner stacked with things that don't have a place. sometimes my "spaces" board on pinterest is greatly inspiring, but sometimes it's a bit depressing -- we all feel that resounding, "if i had limitless money…"

but our homes aren't perfect. and even with limitless time/space/money they wouldn't be!

so...stop thinking of your home as THE universe & try thinking of it as YOUR LITTLE CORNER of the universe. you don't have to showcase every look you love in your home. lately, we've made a big priority of just making our home cheery & cozy -- and putting things like perfect color stories & themes on the back burner. and i've learned so much about what i love & how to let things go. i'll share tips with you soon…but i'm off to purge my drawers!

  4. Love this! You're so right that it's just our little corner, not the whole shebang. I needed to hear that today.

  6. @bekuh: i'm so glad! lately, i feel like just when i've been thinking obsessively about something, i go to your blog or bri's (secret life of bee) and you've said JUST what i needed to hear. it's been rocking my world.

@jessica: embarrassingly, i've read very little of her poetry. but she was a great editor for that installment of best american essays, so if you like her style, i'm sure you'd love her selections for that issue. i highly recommend!

  8. That's the thing about Pinterest. Often inspiring, often depressing.
It is hard to cultivate a "perfect" space when you don't have that much and need to simultaneously live in it. and you have a studio to boot! Well, go you for having the resolve to enjoy what you do have in a comfy space , and not agonize over all the "right" details! I think your apartment is adorable !

  9. Agh I am in desperate need to organize & purge from my apartment! It gets cluttered fast on my desk and I need my desk as room to work and create - and it gets stressful when its overly cluttered, and then I don't work as well. My bookshelf is luckily in another room of the apartment than my room, otherwise I think the amount of 'STUFF' in here would be too too much!!

  10. i think a little junk and clutter lying around just add character to a room sometimes. It's not so easy to compartmentalise every aspect of your life (and home) into a neat little ikea storage box.. and really it would be no fun if it was!

  16. This is awesome and SO TRUE! I have felt that-wishing I had "endless money" thing-and it is hard when you see so many pretty things and you want your home to be "perfect." I love your home though and I love what you said about thinking about it as "your own little corner." So true.
