that time i met colin meloy & carson ellis

meeting colin meloy has graced my bucket list for many years. for those who don't know, colin is the lead singer & songwriter for the decemberists. his words & music were extremely formative in my teenage years -- his tunes were the soundtrack to my love life & many misadventures, and i was made a writer by his example.
last friday, he & his wife, carson ellis, visited the tattered cover in downtown denver (just a few blocks away) to promote their children's series, wildwood chronicles, which colin penned & carson illustrated. colin's prose is as lyrical & captivating as his songs, and the book is dimpled with carson's illustrations -- cover to cover, these books are stunning.
most authors & illustrators are affable at these events, but these two were radiant. they were humble. they were merry. they smiled the whole way through.
oh, and attendants were gifted these wonderful little patches for waiting patiently. did i forget to mention i was front row? no zoom necessary for these shots, friends.
they also shared lots of self-deprecating photographs in a slideshow. it was neat to hear their narrative of creating the book on that level -- i've been to many a book-signing & many a reading (english major here) but this one was genuinely perspicacious of their book-making journey.
oh, and colin & carson, i'm sorry that your eyes are shut in this photograph...and carson, that you're also mid-sentence. but this image needs to live on in photographic proof & glory that i met you & shared a table with you for a minute, and that i made both of you smile.

  2. The thing that made me most jealous of this post was that you're only a few blocks away from the Tattered Cover!!! It's one of my all time favorite bookstores in America (yes, seriously, I note these things). You are a lucky ducky! Hope you had a blast :) x

  3. That sounds like an awesome experience. Meeting authors and artists that you admire is so cool. Sometimes you build people up so high in your mind that it's surreal to meet them.

  7. Oh my goodness this looks amazing! The illustrations are so adorable. When I lived in Denver I went to TC literally EVERY SINGLE DAY. I worked less than a block away at The Wilderness Society, and got either coffee in the morning or spent my lunch break there! I miss it so much! Try the rainbow sprinkle cookies if you haven't- they're amazing!
And 100% yes to a fall blogger meet up :)
    Happy October!

  13. This is so great! I love the Decemberists and while I have never met Colin, I did sneak my way to front row-center of one of their concerts back in 2011. It was glorious. I really want to read these books now! Super jealous of that patch, too.
