The Bookshelf Situation

In our current space, my favorite things to organize and reorganize is our bookshelves. So much so that we now call it, The Bookshelf Situation. It's a capricious and volatile arrangement, and I am often caught fitfully ferreting books back and forth across the apartment at truly strange hours.

This is our newest bookshelf setup. (Also: I have three additional shelves full to capacity, books on top of those shelves, in the windowsills, under the bed, in a box in the closet, books everywhere!) For this shelf, I displayed only books with neutral spines. There are so many good titles here, I just want to read them again -- which is, I think, exactly what a good bookshelf ought to do.

P .s. What are you reading now? I just finished The Hours, am currently reading The Stone Diaries, and am reading Women with Men next.

  1. I definitely have a bookshelf situation of my own. So many books! I love how tall and thin your bookshelf is. Where did you get it?

    1. It's the Billy bookcase from IKEA.

(When we bought it in 2011, they only had birch. I love the white, and the darker veneer wood they have now!)

    1. Haha. Right? Always reading half a dozen books at once! (I figured the list would get too long if I divulged it in its entirety.)

  4. I love when you post about books you're reading since I always have my eye out for my next read. I just finished "Unbroken" (sooo good!) and am now reading The Brothers Karamazov, and Little Women.

    1. Ah, yes, it will grow and grow exponentially, I promise you that. : ) I've read a bit of Canadian lit -- but would love to read more. In college, I lived in Washington, just beneath the Canadian border. So there was a definite literary tone that transcended that borderline -- both the writers themselves, and the works they produced. I miss that region terribly!

  7. I love the way your bookshelf looks - unfortunately my bookshelf is not as pretty - the books are all of too many varied sizes and colors for it to look lovely and match my living room. I have actually been thinking of getting a door to cover the shelf since the books sadly look so unsightly together.

    1. Haha! I have TONS of colorful books -- but so many they warrant different bookshelves, which gives me the freedom to dedicate this one to neutrals. Oy! ; ) Also...it's a very time intensive project, but you could try covering them with kraft or white paper, and calligraphing the titles on the side. We've done that with a couple dozen...my dream is to someday cover them all.
